Today’s auction is so cool that it deserved it’s own post! It’s one of those auctions that make you say “wow”.

I have to say that some of the coolest auctions we’ve seen on VGA are always Sega related. I’m guessing it’s because of the attractive blue SEGA logo that boosts the eye candy, or perhaps it might be because of the lovable hedgehog but some of the most obscure items are always Sega related.

Seller 16-Bit has up a Sega Dreamcast Memorial Stock Paper! How freaking cool is that? Just looking at the paper makes you conclude that this is authentic. I believe the picture was of the newely appointed president for Sega of Japanat the time(1997), Shoichiro Irimajiri. The paper has all sorts of certfication such as the presidents signature, logo, and professional presentation (design/protective plastic). There’s even a couple of stamps on the stock paper which I have no idea what they say. This is also for 1 share of Sega’s stock.

This has to be one of the cooler Sega items we’ve seen(and we’ve seen a lot). I mean this Memorial Option paper is dated in 1998. A lot happened in 1998 for Sega and after the whole downfall for them, this was the last system that Sega ever put out. So there’s a lot significance behind this item. The auction is priced at $799 with a best-offer. If it was me, I’d probably sell it for that much considering the rarity of the piece. It’s not everyday you go on eBay and stumble upon a stock for one of the greatest companies in the video game industry.

Auction Description:

“This is a rare option for Sega Dreamcast stock given out at the launch party of the system to well connected people in the video game industry in Japan that were at Sega’s private launch event.. It was originally intended to be redeemed after one year for a gift comparable to the value of one share of Sega. I read on a French collector website that the screws are 24 carat gold, but I can not verify if that is actually the case or not.

It is complete in box. Option itself is in Mint condition. Box is split on a corner.”

Today marks a special day. It’s been in the news for many months and the time has finally come. Twenty years ago today, on June 23rd 1991 a character was born. His main purpose? To help his company compete against the power house we all know as Nintendo. Sega needed a mascot that would help them compete against Nintendo in the early 90′s, a time where it was pivotal for video game company’s to grow and capture as much market share as they could. You see, video games were becoming more popular after the late 80′s, and more and more families were purchasing video game systems. Nintendo was Sega’s biggest rival at the time. I mean they had so many lovable characters, Mario, Link, Samus, etc… Who did Sega really have?

This didn’t matter too much since Sonic has become one of the best known video game characters of all time. When a game series has sold more than 80 million copies worldwide, this achievement certainly doesn’t lack any merit. In 2005 Sonic was one of the first 3 characters to be introduced into the “Walk of Game”(along with Mario & Link).

So my glass is held high to you Sonic. Thanks for all the great memories you brought to everyone’s childhood and we all look forward to seeing more of you in the future. To commemorate this day I decided to find a couple of  unique items that’s up for auction from various games that Sonic starred in, not just his first game:

I have never stumbled on an item quite like this one. Seller jimmieboxer has on auction a Sonic the Hedgehog MegaDrive Game signed by both Yuji Naka & Hirokazu Yasuhara. Now this is what I call an autographed game collectible. It’s rare to find the US version of the original Sonic game signed by the creator, but to find the MegaDrive game is quite special which is the reason the auction has a price tag of $6000. Yuji Naka was the head programmer of the original Sonic the Hedgehog. He was also head of  the “Sonic Team” which was an elite group of programmers & designers. So to get his autograph on the original Japanese release of Sonic the Hedgehog is very special. Likewise, Hirokazu Yasuhara was a game designer who was Yuji’s right wing under the Sonic Team. He designed the gameplay & stages for most of the Sonic games. So you have the best of both worlds in one single auction. The actual game is in incredible shape with no cracks or tears in the plastic which is very common for the Sega boxes. The signatures are on the actual insert; one on the belly of Sonic, the other on the back side of the insert in the top left corner. Despite everything else being mentioned in the auctions description, the seller didn’t add his personal story which would have been a nice touch. But I guess in the end it’s not the story that sells but rather whats up for auction. Still, I’d love to know how he acquired such a gem.

Mortal Kombat Trophy Slammer 1990s Midway Promo – This was a promotional item given out during the original release of the game. It actually says “Trophy Edition” on the coin which. This coin is similar to that Twilight Princess coin we featured months ago here if anyone remembers.
Duke Nukem Forever Statue/Bust with cards & COA – This is one of the items you got with the Duke Nukem Forever package.

Currently on eBay, seller simplysega has around 115 Sega Mega Drive, Master System and Genesis games up on auction for cheap. Most of the games are ending on Nov.14th( this Sunday). He’s got tons of other games he will be listing throughout the month which is good news for you Sega collectors. Keep track of him for the upcoming weeks because I was told a lot more rare titles will be put up.

I’ve seen this seller sell many rare import games such as the Portuguese and Australian versions of Alien Soldier, Australian Phantasy Star IV, Streets of Rage 3, and a brand new Brazilian Duke Nukem 3-D! He also had up a Sega Master System Sonic the Hedgehog official box-artwork which sold for some big bucks. Not only does he have some rare  Sega Master System, Mega Drive, and  Genesis games, but they are all on many formats such as: UK, European, American, Canadian, Brazilian, Australian, Japanese, and Chinese. Pretty cool!

Simplysega also has rare unreleased games like The Story of Mio Hoshi Wo Sagashite,, High School Kimengumi, and Dinosaur Dooley. The games that are imported are all translated into English! One game to note is his “Dino Basher” reproduction. Everything is in great condition and it’s the sellers last one, just though I’d through it out there.

I haven’t seen a clearance sale like this before and I doubt I’ll see one soon so you should check out what other games the seller has.

eBay seller Psmuseum is doing a noble deed by listing rare PlayStation items and donating 100% of the proceeds to the American Cancer Society. He’s at it again with the listing of a signed PlayStation Anniversary console signed by the original SCEA Executive Launch Team.

This is an impressive auction. To get the former President of SCEA, and VP/DB of Marketing and Operations is not an easy task. I’m pretty curious on how these signings were made possible; did the seller already have connections or did he have to go through a long road to contact the developers? I am still dumbfounded with the other Twisted Metal auction that had the signings of all the original developers of the game. Nonetheless, I’ll let the seller sum up the significance of these signings:

“SCEA did what few people in the industry thought they could, that is beat Sega  and Nintendo in the North American video game market.  Arguably much of  SCEA’s success came not only from a superior hardware console but also by  implementing a creative and disruptive marketing plan to blow the competition  away.  Although Steve Race resigned from SCEA before launch day, he is the  visionary credited with bringing together brilliant minds from the industry and  helped form SCEA into a successful and thriving company.”

This is the sole reason that the signings on the PS console is so significant since the launch team had so much to do with the success of the PlayStation. If we went back in time to the beginning implementation stages of the system, and you told me that you had a vision of beating Sega and Nintendo in the N.American game market I’d honestly think you’re crazy!

This is truly a one-of-a-kind item. The console has a manufacture date of September 1995 to commemorate PlayStation’s 15th Anniversary, and the model code is SCPH-1001. The console comes equipped with everything you need to play….but common now,  are you  really going to hook-up this signed console to play? I mean you could, but the idea of having a glass display with this PlaySation seems better for me . Anyways, the signatures that will be on the console are: Steve Race(former SCEA President), Chip Herman(VP SCEA Marketing), Stretch Anderson(VP SCEA Operations), and Camilla Bravo (DB SCEA MArketing).

Here’s another interesting auction showing an unusual artwork which is supposedly for a Sega game.  I told you guys I would keep track of what eBay seller vigiljeff is listing since it’s always something unique or rare. However, the listing found today is a mystery. Now I’ve been searching for awhile but couldn’t put my finger on it. I’ll be honest and say I have no idea where the art work comes from.

The story behind this is that the seller(Jeff) received this scroll from Japanese artists that traveled to Redwood City(Sega’s headquarter) on a business trip. The seller was working for Sega at the time, and anytime the Japanese artists needed something Jeff would receive an email from the department and carry out their requests(since there was a language barrier). During their stay, the artists drew these characters on the scroll on their spare time. In the end, while  Jeff was escorting the artists to the airport, one of the artists took the scroll out of the bag and gave it to him.

I have no idea where they could be from. The characters are probably not even from a game and were just random pictures. Or, they could be from a game that was only released in Japan. One will not know, but the only games that come to mind are Shinobi and Ninja Gaiden, both which do not resemble the characters on the scroll. I was able to figure out past auctions that were questionable, but this one is a mystery to me.

eBay seller vigiljeff has been letting go a lot of his Sega collectibles he had collected while working for Sega of America. I have listed many of his items before, most notably the sale of Tom Kalinske (CEO of Sega in the 90′s) personal Sonic Statue which sold for a very decent price. Also congrats to the seller for the sale of his “Night Trap” original art work signed. The ending price shocked me as much as the next person, but it is a piece of Sega history.

Seller vigiljeff has some more interesting Sega items up such as this Sonic the Hedgehog DIC TV Show Gang framed picture from 1993. Check out the frame, it consists of all the DIC cartoon characters! At the bottom of the frame it says: “1993 DIC ANIMATION CITY, INC. AND SEGA OF AMERICA, INC”.

Whats funny is that the seller writes:”yes there is a story behind it and how it came to be in my hands. but I don’t have the time right now and im sure you all are sick of my SEGA ADVENTURES“.

Ummm….I don’t know about you guys, but I never get sick of hearing his Sonic adventures while working for the big S! Also, by writing down a story about how he acquired the piece, I’m sure that it would get more interests from Sega fans. As a rule of thumb for eBay, anything interesting added to the item like a story in the description always add’s value. Ebayers also appreciate this and don’t start to question, “Is this official?“. But, the story needs to have some proof as well which vigiljeff has shown us with Mr.Kalinske’s Sonic statue. So taking 5 minutes to write a story actually helps your cause .

This frame is something I’ve never seen before, and I’m certain we will be seeing more from this seller since he is an ex employee for Sega!

Crash Bandicoot 3 1/2 Tall Plush – This thing is huge! I’ve been recently doing CB searches for the past month thanks for the inspirtation from VGMM and this is the first I’ve seen of this one. The CB plush has the tag and looks in great condition. Seller says: “Made by Play by Play and I’ve had this guy for at least 6-7 years. He is standing in this picture (propped up in a corner) but he does NOT stand on his own unless propped up in a certain way. His legs are very thin and the styrofoam in them has given way so it looks like he has knees where it’s given way. The rest of the styrofoam is firm in all areas. His nose is a little floppy but I think it’s supposed to be that way.”
Super Mario Bros. 3 McDonald’s Happy Meal Display – This was on eBay for awhile. It looks to be in amazing shape except it’s missing a piece at the top of the display.  It’s the “Available Now” tag. I don’t think I’ve seen an auction selling this display intact with the tag for a very long time. It’s quite hard to find. But the price is very good considering that there’s a “best-offer” option.

I have some really nice kiosks and store standees. The Dreamcast kiosk is extremely pricy. I wouldn’t pay more than $500 bucks for it, but it is a nice piece, I’ve seen this up close and personal. The virtual boy kiosk is really neat as it usually fetches a high price. A Video Game shop near me(not one of these commercialized, monopolistic ones) has this and it’s so cool to see how creative Nintendo is.

The line up today will feature some extremely expensive prototypes, some actually very rare. The Super Scope prototype display was apprently just that, a prototype but I am sure I have seen this before on actual display. Could have been a variation though I wont go on the record and say it is in fact a prototype.

As for the Blockbuster World Video Game Championship 2 Cart, it’s a reproduction:
