On Gaming with Nathan Barnatt

You may know him as Keith Apicary from Talking Classics, or Ray Amsley from Eat Lightning, or the Skittles obsessed Trale Lewous, but they are all one man… The very talented Nathan Barnatt. Nathan has agreed to an “On Gaming” interview for VGA which means everyone is in for a treat today. Questions you have hoped to ask him one day may be answered here. The On Gaming interviews are focused on video games and gaming alone, so it’s a logical choice to seek out the creator of Keith Apicary.

For those who don’t know who Keith Apicary is, I believe this video will give you an idea…

On gaming with Nathan Barnatt…

Video Game Auctions: How did your past gaming experiences influence you in creating Keith Apicary?

Nathan Barnatt: Well when I created him I pulled a lot of influences from people I knew in high school and memories of kids I talked to at Funcoland as well as kids I knew who did live action role playing. People who were filled with information on video games and can spew it all out without breathing for two minutes. They knew everything about those games. They were so into their hobby that they didn’t care about anything else. I like people like that. They don’t have the same kind of ego. They couldn’t care less about what people think of them or what everyone else is doing. They almost live in their own world.  And I’ve always played video games and I’ve always had a ton of them around the house. So I had a lot of “props” in a way that could be used in videos. Every game or console I had was material. So I had a ton of material.

VGA: In many of the videos you have made, you’ve shown that you own more than a few arcade cabinets. Is there a title you hope to add to your home arcade?

NB: Yeah right now I have 13 cabinets and my brother made me a mini Neo Geo MAME that I’m shipping out to LA this month. Last year I got a full sit down F-Zero cabinet which was one I always wanted and never thought I’d have since there are only 19 in the US (as far as I know). I’d really like an After Burner flight simulator cabinet, but that is kind of ridiculous.

VGA: What would you say was the most difficult boss you’ve taken down in video games?

NB: Well I had a really hard time beating Seth on SF4 the first few time I played it. I never thought I’d beat him. But now I’ve beaten him like 80 times so whatever, no big deal. And I’ve never beaten Kung Fung in Comix Zone but don’t tell anyone. Besides now that I have save states on my MAME Kung Fung is done!

VGA: What is your favorite genre of games and what are a few titles that stand out from the rest for you?

NB: I really like side scrollers like Metal Slug, the Sonics, Kirby’s, Streets of Rage. I like straight forward action platformers and beat em ups. Odd World was an awesome one too. So I guess puzzle games too. I don’t know if I have a favorite genre. Lately I’ve really liked action games that involve everything. Like the Uncharted games and Tomb Raider Underworld. I just like whatever is fun.

VGA: Out of all home consoles through video game history, which console do you feel has the best game pad design?

NB: I’ve always liked the Genesis controller. I like the size and shape. I’ve never liked the Atari joystick. It’s weird to hold a joystick. I also really like the 360 controller. That’s comfortable. But the Genesis controller definitely wins for worlds best controller.

VGA: What are your thoughts on motion controllers? Do you believe they improve gaming or are they just a fad?

NB: I don’t like motion controllers really. Its cool I guess but I think it’s kind of a novelty thing. Excite Truck on Wii is fun but other than that I don’t care for playing games with a motion controller. I think eventually it’ll die off.

VGA: If you were to put every character from every fighting game into one title… who would you chose first?

NB: Terry Bogard!!! He’d be my number 1 pick. First would be Terry from Fatal Fury 91′. My second pick would be Terry Bogard from Mark Of The Wolves and my 3rd would be Terry Bogard from KOF XII.

VGA: Is there something you would like to see in the future of video games? Technology, titles, characters, or cross-overs for example.

NB: I would like a new Mirrors Edge. In my opinion that was the best 1st person game ever made! I’d also like to see real virtual reality made. Like you put on a helmet and entire an entire virtual world. Until then I’ll just play Virtual Boy.

Thanks to Nathan from all of us at VGA for this great interview. That Terry Bogard triple-pick was awesome lol.

Yes! The Sega Genesis controller! Most people know this, but the Genesis controller was the best for fighting games. Just try playing MK on both the Genesis and the SNES and you’ll notice the difference right away! Man Nathan’s videos are just too funny. I find myself watching his dance videos on a regular basis :). Great interview Akira!
