Over 30 Years of Video Games in One Auction

I first saw this auction at Videgamemm.com which was posted by one of the community members, VGMStudios. I thought I’d post it up here in case none of you spotted this insane auction already. Basically the title goes by “OVER 30 years of VIDEOGAMES COLLECTION… The history of VideoGames”. The seller is  *videogames.museum* pretty much states it as it is when you check out the list. When you first check out the auction, the seller was nice enough to write his whole story (or some of it). It starts off by, “After a life spent collecting video games..” (which we can all relate), “I decide to sell off my entire collection“…

What’s crazy to point out is that the seller created his account on November 28th, 2012 and already has 6500+ views on his profile! That’s unheard of!

We’ve all seen these type of auctions before. Gamers who have an enormous collection only to sell it (or try to) in the end. I can honestly say I’ve reach that point to, and from personal experience it all comes down to money. At some point in time our finances aren’t what they use to be, and this type of reality has us making some strong decisions, whether it be selling one rare item from your collection, or all of it. For example, check out this past auction in which the seller was selling his entire Super Mario Collection (click here!). If you look at the collection you come to the conclusion that it’s MASSIVE. Seller had a collection that probably amount up to 25 years. But we all have to ask what do these sellers have in common? Why did they reach the boiling point of selling EVERYTHING that they own which took a lot of time, money, and most importantly effort. It’s crazy! But I suspect that money is a big involvement. How about that fellow who was selling his whole entire Nintendo Display Basement? I remember Kenji wrote a piece about it but I cannot find the post at this moment. That seller’s reasoning was simply “moving on”. Sometimes we realize that our collecting habits are a thing of the past and we move on, taking on more important responsibilities (family, house, business, etc…).

Nevertheless, it’s always interesting seeing these block buster auctions, especially one with the title “OVER 30 years of VIDEOGAMES COLLECTION”. Now digging in deeper, the seller is from Italy and he has “zero”(0) feedback. Also, there’s already one(1) bidder on the auction in which the seller turned the bid list into a “private one”. Maybe the reasoning behind this is to “test the waters”, or perhaps he’s showing off in his video game community of his enormous collection. An auction that has a confident $550,000 starting bid is probably no joke as here’s no best-offer. The seller has an interesting mix with video games, exclusive consoles, interesting items such as the rare Resident Evil Umbrella box and so forth. We won’t know the true meaning behind this auction, but I guess it doesn’t concern most of us since it’s just another “massive auction” in which we will see come and go. Is the current bidder legit? Who knows as we can all come to our own conclusions (I know I have). However, when I see these type of auctions I know one thing for sure, I hold onto my collection even closer to me because without it I would be a lost soul, and rediscovering my inner child would be near impossible. We should all hold onto something, even if it’s only <10 items just to remind us of our love for video games and that most of our childhood was filled with incredible stories brought to us by ingenious story designers.

Below is what the seller has in his description. I’d like to add everything from his auction just because this is an interesting auction and will be great to look back on:

After a life spent collecting video games I decide to sell off my entire collection.

I just have too much things and the space to store them is finished long ago… also I realized that if I want to play at least half of my games, I should live two or three entire human life…
Just to give an idea of the huge amount of items present in my collection, I spent the last two months of my life taking pictures and making lists, working about eight hours a day just in order to make an inventory and to figure out what I have. Even now after all the time spent checking things I’m not sure to have included all in the lists…
Due to the sheer amount of items is even difficult to present it, and I don’t really know were to start… so I try to do my best even if I’m sure I might forget something.
Instead to pick up some favourite consoles and maybe try to complete all the games related, I choosed to collect most systems possible with the most rapresentative and rare games for each console.
This collection is the story of the videogames from A to Z, from the game & watch and old pong systems to the actual generation of PS3 and XBOX360.
I think that with all the stuff in this auction you can actually open a museum…
And now some numbers. I divide the collection in various categories:
Games, Consoles, Controllers, Accessories, Promotional and various items.
-The games count over 6850 pcs. with about 6780 boxed and 70 loose, and are in various format NTSC Japan or Usa and also PAL.
-The consoles are over330, with 307 system boxed and 24 loose, and even in this case we have all the different standards.
-The controllers are about 220 with 167 boxed and 52 loose. I included all the kind of controller, from the simple joypad to the special controller like all the konami bemani to the densha de go train controller, and the arcade joystick as well.
-The accessories are about 185, and in this category I put the ac adapters, the various av cables, the rumble packs, the memory cards, battery packs, the converters for the region locked games, and various other items like screens, printers etc.
-The promo and various items are composed by promotional items like soudtracks or gadgets relate to a specific game or console, demo disc not for sale, limited edition item like the resident evil umbrella box or the Kratos twin blades, various action figures, strategy guides etc.etc.
I took about 10000 picture, but obviously is not praticable to show all these pictures on a auction, so I tried to squeeze all in just about 500 pictures.
Anyway you can find all the photos on my Imageshack page: http://imageshack.us/user/videogamesmuseum(I’m still uploading them so please check for updates!)
I focused on the series, so I have all the games about Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Castlevania, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Sakura Wars, Super Robot Taisen just to make some example. Also I focused on some type of games, like the Shooters or the RPG: I have about all the shooters for the Megadrive, Saturn, Dreamcast, PC Engine, Playstation 1 & 2 and so on, and also I have about all the RPG, and I have to specify that the shooters are japanese but the RPG are the english version (which are for sure most collectable and valuable than the japanese). Of course there are about all the classic rare games, from Dracula X Rondò of blood (three copies, one sealed), Radiant Silvergun (two copies, One sealed), Magical Chase (two copies, one sealed) and then two copies of Ginga Fukai Densetsu Sapphire, and many many other… Hundreds of games, especially for the later consoles, are still brand new and sealed, and in many case, especially for the rare or good one, I have two copies, one to play and one sealed. I included in this auction either a nice collection of pcb board, with classics such as Burger Time, Wonder Boy, Rygar, Splatterhouse, Ghosts’n Goblins and Ghouls’n Ghosts, and much more, and also rarities like Osman/cannon dancer.
Conditions of the games may vary but the 85% are in great/excellent conditions .The case in which the games are incomplete or in poor condition are really rare.
About the systems what to say? They are well over 300, about 50% of them are brand new, another 40% are complete and in good to very good conditions and the last 10% are loose or not 100%complete or maybe in fair conditions. I have some very good collector pieces, like the Hitachi Gamenavi Saturn, Both the Bio Hazard Dreamcast (red & blue), The Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles pearl white Gamecube (only 150Pcs in the world), Two Game Boy Advance SP Famicom color for the 20th Mario Anniversary, The Metal Gear limited edition PSP and the list can go on.
I tested some of the important one (not the brand new…), like the PC Engine LT or the Saturn Gamenavi and they work fine, but I have to say that I’ve not tested all because it is a task to big for me at this time. I cannot guaranteed that all is perfectly functional, and please note that all the material in this collection is sold as is. You know that some console are particoulary delicate in some specific area, like the speakers of the PC Engine GT, or the belts of the Famicom Disk or again the plastic gear of the old Nec Cd rom. Sadly in the cases previously mentioned even if the console is brand new, problably it wont work because the problem is the deperibility of some parts due to the age and not the use (of course, in that case, it is possibile to fix them)
The controllers are a very interesting category, I have many different kind of them: from the normal joypads, maybe in different color, to the arcade controller like big professional joystick or steering wheels, to about all the music controller like guitar, dance mat, dj station, battery, maracas and many other different and strange devices. Plus I have a large quantity of light guns and many different train controllers and also i would to remark the presence of all three Konami Arcade Style controller, for Guitar Freaks, Beat Mania and Pop’n music, just looking at them is a joy for the eyes… and all is brand new, never played with!
What else to say… I have hundreds of accessories, Limited Editions, Promos, special items related to video games, like action figures, soundtracks, and also a lot of rare books and strategy guides.
I tried to explain more or less how is structured my collection, like I said before it’s too big to show all, so I hope my explanation is clear enough to give an idea of the contents.
I will sell all my collection as a whole because I have no time to do otherwise, maybe I can consider to split it in lot (for example the dreamcast lot, the pc engine lot.etc.). But the priority is to sell all in one time.
About this two very important things: Please don’t ask me to sell this or that game because I’m not interested to sell single items, and also don’t ask me for prices, I would set a price for the whole collection, then if you are interested in a single lot just make me an offer and I will do my considerations about it.
About the shipments, i think that ship all those items is a great task, and right now I don’t know how much it will cost, but I have a parent that send container all over the world frequently, so I can use his experience to do a proper work, you’ll understand I’ll need about a month to pack all.(please note the buyer is responsible for shipping cost and insurance)
All the games are stored in a basement with the right temperature, not too hot, not too cold, no humidity, no smoke and no direct light. I have a pet but he’s not interested in videogames…
The payment has to be made only by bank transfer and in a reasonable time after the auction ends.
Two last thing: sorry for my english, I tried to do my best and I hope to be understood. Second thing: this is a new account I registered ONLY for this auction to mantain some privacy and to separate this important auction from my normal activities but I’m an eBay user since the 2000!!!
For the rest just check the pictures, and if you have some questions just let me know and I will do my best to respond.
Thanks and happy bidding!

Since Italy is one of ebay’s most notorious scam centers this guy probably spent the last 13 years swindling all of this stuff. Seriously though, this may be legit but even if you ignore the red flags the one thing I can’t stand is the shill bidder. Ebay shows some private bidder info and this one has retracted bids in the last 6 months. He also has a bid on 2 other video games (I guess the thousands here weren’t enough) and a pair of pants because I guess rich people buy their pants on ebay.

Hmm, new account, Italy, bank transfer, and now the auction has disappeared. I’m assuming this was a scam?
